A Study of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice Relative to Maternal and Child Health among Women Residing in Am-nam Dong Busan


Abstract
A study of the knowledge, attitudes and practice concerning maternal and child health of 290 married woman residing in Am-nam Dong was conducted during the period from July to August 1973 using a designed questionnaire with well trained interviewers. The results and findings obtained from the study are summarized as follows:
1) Pregnancy, pregnancy wastage, live-births
(a) The most frequent ages at marriage were from 20 to 24, rating 64.8%. 42.7% of the women "experienced their first deliveries between 21 and 24 and those women who were married for 10 years or less constituted 62.8%.
(b) While those who had experienced from 1 to 5 pregnancies turned out to be largest in proportion or 82.8% and the average of pregnancies was 3.6, 76.2% of the women experienced only 1-3 live births and the number of live-births on the whole averaged only 2.5. The number of pregnancies and live-births- experienced by women declined gradually with the progress in educational levels and rose with the increase in current ages.
(c) There were 309 pregnancy wastages and 691 live-births per 1000 pregnancies experienced by women. Of the pregnancy wastage induced abortions numbered 205, spontaneous abortions, 71 and still-births, 33.
(d) About 13.5¡Æ0 of the women interviewed were pregnant at the time. 2) Prenatal care
(a) 49. 7% of the women received prenatal check-ups. This percentage rose with the progress in educational levels.
(b) The prevalence rate of illnesses during the last pregnancy was 72. 4%; of these 10. 5% of the sick women received treatment while the rest(89. 50) received none.
3) Delivery environments and postnatal care
(a) Among 290. women who had experienced delivery, 60.4% of the women used their homes as the place for their last delivery, while the rest of the women were assisted by a doctor or midwife at a hospital of clinic for their last baby. The higher the level of education the more frequently the deliveries were assisted by doctors or midwives. 82. 3% of the women between the ages of 25 and 34 had their last baby delivered by a doctor in a hospital.
(b) Kinds of delivery sheets used. Among 175 cases of home delivery 57.8% used cement bag paper or vinyl sheets. 17. 1% used nothing.
(c) Among 175 cases of home delivery, 93. 1% used scissors for cutting the umbilical cord.
(d) 52. 8% of the deliveries were assisted by a doctor or midwife. Of the remaining 47.2%, 7.2% were unassisted.
(e) 53.8% of the women fed their colostrum to their babies. This did not seem to be related to the mother¢¥s education.
(f) 13.4% of the women had a complete rest for one month or more after birth. The higher the level of education, the longer the period of rest observed.
(g) 23.4% of the women received postnatal check ups. This percentage rose with the progress in educational levels.
(h) 43.1 % of the women used the public bath after 4 weeks after delivery. 4) Child health
(a) Knowledge and practice regarding immunization for their children: most of the women (85.5%) could name at least one kind of immunization. 4.5% could name 6 kinds of immunization. The mother¢¥s education level did not seem to influence their ability to name immunizations. 84.8% of children had. bed: immunized at least once.
(b) Weaning period: 27.2% said that the beginning of the weaning for their last born children was from six to twelve months of age.
5) Attitude and practice regarding family planning
(a) The average number of living children is 2.48.
(b) 87.6% of the women accepted the idea of family planning. 25.2% were found to be current users of contraceptive methods.
(c) 35.2% of the women had experienced a pregnancy owing to not using contraceptive methods after the previous delivery.
(d) 37.4% of the women began to use contraceptive methods from their first mensturation after the previous delivery.
6) Attitudes with regard to pregnancy, prenatal care, delivery and child care
66.6% of the women expressed a desire to learn more about pregnancy, prenatal care from professional facilities of persons. This percentage rose with the progress in educational levels.
